Parent education Session in Partnership with Community Education Services

February 15 2018 Supporting your Anxious Child – What Works & What Doesn’t (Airdrie)

This workshop offers an introduction to childhood stress and anxiety. Topics will include: what is the difference between stress and anxiety? When is anxiety helpful; when is it not? Examples of how anxiety can “look”- both at home and in the classroom - will be provided. Hands-on, take-home strategies will be combined with evidence-based theory, in order to better understand what is helpful and less helpful when supporting your anxious child.

February 28 2018: Understanding Teen Mental Health & Wellness (Chestermere)

Everyone has mental health, teens included. This workshop will provide information to help parents and caregivers understand and support positive mental health for youth in their teen years. Learn to distinguish between normal feelings and behaviour of young people, and signs and symptoms of mental health concerns and issues. Relevant resources will be shared.

March 6 2018: Understanding the Relationship Between Sleep and Good Mental Health (Chestermere)

This session will discuss the importance of sleep, provide increased awareness of the physical and emotional consequences of sleep deprivation and suggest ways to promote adequate sleep in young people.

March 6 2018: Navigating the Social Media Nightmare (Cochrane)

This session will cover: what social media platforms are out there and which ones are popular? What are the dangers associated with social media? How can I educate myself and support my child to be safe on social media? Participants are encouraged to bring their device, along with any questions they might have regarding social media.

March 8 2018: Understanding ADHD & Executive Functioning (Chestermere)

The session will be an overview of ADHD and how issues with impulsivity and/or inattention impact children's ability to manage their environments. The session will also explore the impact ADHD has on Executive Functioning and how it relates to managing everyday tasks, and meeting daily expectations at home and at school, including social, emotional, behavioural and academic demands.

Session Details: Are you Parents of a high school student in Airdrie with special needs in Airdrie? Do you ever feel isolated with little to no resources to help support your child? This group provides parents of high school students (grades 9-12) with special needs

the opportunity to connect with others in the community, while offering guest speakers, informative tools and resources.

Open to Airdrie and surrounding community parents of high school students (Grades 9 – 12) with special needs.
