The following laptop standards are Minimum Recommended Laptops recommended for middle School
• Rugged design
• Built-in wireless N or AC - machines more than a year or two old may not work in Rocky View schools
• 13–15-inch LCD with 1 gig video ram so unit could also be plugged into a monitor and keyboard at home. Larger LCD not recommended as they use too much power and are heavy.
• Quad core processor with 4 gigs of RAM • A service agreement with the seller • Virus/Spyware protection - required on all PC laptops.
• Battery life - older laptop batteries do not last more than three years Software
• Productivity Software: OpenOffice and LibreOffice, FreeOffice, Kingsoft Office Free, NeoOffice (free)
• Virus Protection • Photo Editor: Picasa, 2. Fotor, 3. On1 Perfect Effects 9. Free, 4. Serif PhotoPlus Starter Edition, 5.Pixlr Editor, 6. GIMP, 7. PhotoScape, 8. IrfanView.
• A Movie Editor: Windows Movie Maker, Kate's Video Toolkit, cloud based WeVideo, Avidemux, VSDC Free Video Editor, MPEG Streamclip 1.2.1b6, VirtualDub, Free Video Editor, Lightworks.
• An Audio Editor: Wavosaur, Waveshop, Acoustica Basic Edition, MP3Gain, Audacity, Music Editor Free, MP3 Quality Modifier, Wavepad, mp3DirectCut.
• iLife Suite (comes on all Mac computers)

• Apple Store for Education - RVS schools offers parents access to the Apple Store. This logged in access gives a roughly 3% discount on computers. This link is for RVS student Apple purchases by their families only.
• Dell Canada - RVS' membership through Dell's Employee Purchase Program guarantees a minimum 7% discount on the purchase of any Dell product. For more information, please contact a Dell representative at 1.877.297.6974 and quote RVS Member ID: 5721966.
• HP Academy - offers RVS a 10% discount on the purchase of any HP product. HP Academy will also give back 7% of the purchase value to the school, to fund future technology purchases or supplies. Contact an HP representative at 1.877.231.4351 for more information.
• Memory Express - has a broad selection of Windows Laptops and a very good service agreement program.
